Ela Minus & Nick León - qué les pasó a mis amigos?

Ela Ela Minus and Nick León began by asking questions. Though on their own trajectories in different corners of the electronic music landscape, they found they shared many of the same ambitions and trepidations. Getting to know each other led to: Should we make music together? What will it sound like? Do you hear the same way that I do? And then, as both navigated crucial breakthrough chapters of their careers, they asked existential questions that became lyrics: “What happens if I choose not to listen? What happens if we stop working? What happens if I leave everything to chance? What happens if we stop the music?”
Their friendship and their creative spark were instant, already an answer to the question that ached at the center of the music they made together and gave their new collaborative EP its title: qué les pasó a mis amigos? Translating to “What happened to my friends?,” the phrase immediately struck Minus and León. It summed up everything that they were experiencing as artists on the road but also simply as people in their thirties, watching life take new paths than expected. Everything the two commiserated on — heartbreak from fractured or withered friendships, exploitation in fraught industries, a pervasive frustration struggling to locate happiness when everything simply feels off — poured into their new songs.
After years of mutual admiration, Minus and León first met on a fateful day in Mexico City in 2024. Each was on their way to the most important release of their respective careers. For Minus, that was 2025’s DÍA, a stunning sophomore album that flooded the shadowy, nocturnal aesthetic of her debut acts of rebellion with a new spectrum of color and emotion, conveyed with her mastery of rare synthesizers. The same year, León released his debut album A Tropical Entropy. After a host of club bangers and production work for everyone from Denzel Curry to A Tropical Entropy was León’s most personal work: a humid portrait of a changing Miami captured in the liminal oranges and purples of sunrises and sunsets.
There was no plan and no pressure, but Minus and León knew throughout that they would make music together. The original seeds of qué les pasó a mis amigos? were planted in Mexico City during that initial meeting, and the two let the ideas marinate in the ensuing years. Other collaborations happened in the interim: León remixed the standout DÍA track “QQQQ,” while Minus appeared on A Tropical Entropy’s “Ghost Orchid.” They reconvened in Los Angeles in 2026, tearing their original ideas apart, rebuilding them, fueled by an intuitive workflow and a shared sense of rage and resistance at simply continuing to exist and care in a tenuous 21st century.
More than that, they were fueled by that rare feeling of finding someone who truly and completely sees you. “It was so free,” León says. “There were unspoken understandings of what we wanted to do. That’s not normal.”
“We immediately felt this kinship,” Minus adds.
Though there was no premeditation on genre or aesthetic, Minus and León nevertheless reached a synthesis of their styles and viewpoints: In these three songs, you can hear his dystopian club music seamlessly mingling with her punk-inflected, writerly interpretation of electronic music. “qué les pasó a mis amigos?” set the tone for their collaboration: patiently building from thrum to cascade, the duo crafted a mini-epic that buoyed Minus’ world-weary, anxious lyrics. Beginning life as a lonely composition transmitted from a train ride across Europe on a grey, rainy day, “lose my cool” is a softer, reflective piece. The EP’s only track written in English, it finds Minus conveying the claustrophobic feeling that arrives in an argument with someone close, when suddenly you both become so unrecognizable as to be strangers: “Can’t get out of my own way/ Stood in silence/ As you shout/ It forms under my feet/ A path away from you.” The final track they worked on, “espiral” is perhaps the song that perfectly captures what one might expect from an Ela Minus x Nick León collaboration — and where each is going next.
With the freedom to experiment without expectations, the two used qué les pasó a mis amigos? to try new ideas, or to discover new ideas they hadn’t even known they wanted to try. In turn, the EP is informing what each is working on solo, but also lays the groundwork for further collaborations in the future. “There will be more music together,” León promises. For now, qué les pasó a mis amigos? is a beautiful, moody collision of two travelers crossing paths in a moment, in a place, to make music that is melancholic, but refuses to stop moving. And after years of making sense of it all alone, Minus and León learned the answer can be as simple as moving together.
